Heavy obscuration in X–ray weak AGNs

چکیده
We present observations in the 0.1–100 keV spectral band of 8 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained by means of BeppoSAX. These sources were selected according to their [OIII] optical emission line flux, to avoid biases against obscuration on the pc scale. All sources were detected. All of them are weak X–ray emitters, and most of them are characterized by prominent iron lines at 6.4–7 keV (EW> 500 eV) and by a flat continuum, indicative of heavy obscuration along our line of sight (NH > 10 25 cm in most cases). These results 1) provide further evidence in favor of the unified scenario, and 2) indicate that the average obscuration of type 2 AGNs is very likely much higher than deduced by former X–ray surveys. These findings have important implications for the synthesis of the X– ray background.

The X-Ray Zurich Environmental Study (X-ZENS). I. Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of active galactic nuclei in galaxies in nearby groups
We describe X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton of 18Mgroup ∼ 1–6× 10 13 M⊙, z ∼ 0.05 galaxy groups from the Zurich ENvironmental Study. The X-ray data aim at establishing the frequency and properties, unaffected by host galaxy dilution and obscuration, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in central and satellite galaxies, also as a function of halo-centric distance. X-ray point-source ...
متن کاملOn the Unification of Active Galactic Nuclei
The inevitable spread in properties of the toroidal obscuration of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) invalidates the widespread notion that type 1 and 2 AGNs are intrinsically the same objects, drawn randomly from the distribution of torus covering factors. Instead, AGNs are drawn preferentially from the distribution; type 2 are more likely drawn from the distribution higher end, type 1 from its lo...
متن کاملCosmological evolution of supermassive black holes in galactic centers unveiled by hard X-ray observations
We review the current understanding of the cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes in galactic centers elucidated by X-ray surveys of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Hard X-ray observations at energies above 2 keV are the most efficient and complete tools to find "obscured" AGNs, which are dominant populations among all AGNs. Combinations of surveys with various flux limits and survey...
متن کامل1 1 9 Ja n 20 00 Where are the type 2 AGNs ?
Most of the energy of the X-ray background is contributed by sources with a hard X-ray spectrum, harder than the spectrum observed in nearby type 1 AGNs. The hard background contributors are conventionally identified with type 2 AGNs, obscured by circumnuclear matter both in the optical and in the soft X rays. However, preliminary results of identification programs seem to find systematically f...
متن کاملXMM‐Newton Observations of the Red Type 1.8 Quasar 2M1049+5837: Reflection from Cold and Warm (Ionized) Matter
Chandra observations of the type 1.8, low-redshift (z 1⁄4 0:115), red (J KS 2) quasar 2MASSJ 104943+583750 (2M1049+5837) indicated an unusually hardX-ray spectrum (HR 0:6), suggesting obscuration ofNH 4 ; 10 cm 2 and a flat 0:4 power-law slope. A higher signal-to-noise ratio XMM-Newton observation reported here reveals a more complex spectrum, being extremely hard above 2 keV, 0:6, with a well-...
